Length of Service

Jurors are typically summoned for a one-week session. Occasionally, jurors may be summoned for multi-week sessions when lengthy cases are to be tried. Jurors seated for a trial must serve until the trial ends, which may be two days to several weeks.

When and Where to Report

Jurors must call the jury information line at (910) 571-3705 after 6:00 p.m. on the evening before their date of service to receive instructions on if and when they are to report.

Jurors should report to Courtroom A at the Montgomery County Courthouse, 108 E. Main Street, Troy.

By order of the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, cell phones and other electronic devices will not be allowed in the courthouse on days that court is in session and this includes days that jurors are required to report for jury service.

Request for Jury Service Excuse or Deferral

General Information

Deferral/Excusal: To request an excuse or postponement from jury service, please submit the information via Electronic Form located below OR Mail. Your request must be received no later than seven (7) days prior to your service date. A decision regarding your request will be provided, if necessary, upon a determination of the court. Requests sent by MAIL must include the completed Application for Excuse, Deferral, Exemption, and Disqualification from Jury Service and supporting documentation (required supporting documentation and instructions may be found on the summons). The ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION FORM (see below) may be completed in lieu of the mail option. The electronic request must be submitted a minimum of seven (7) days prior to your appearance date. (Requirements and instructions are listed below.)

Reasons for Excusal, Postponement or Deferment

Jury service is the solemn obligation of all qualified citizens. Persons qualified to serve must:

  • Reside in Montgomery County
  • Be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Understand the English language
  • Have not served as a juror during the preceding two (2) years or as a grand juror in the past six (6) years
  • Be physically and mentally competent

Exemptions, Excuses and Postponements may be granted for the following reasons and the following information is required to be submitted with your request to be excused.

  • If you are not a U.S. Citizen, please provide a copy of your visa or green card.
  • If you are not a resident of this County, please provide a copy of your driver's license or utility bill.
  • If you have a disability that interferes with jury service, please provide a doctor's statement.
  • If you are a felon and your rights have not been restored, please list the date and county of conviction.
  • Please explain your reason if you are age 72 years or older and wish to claim an exemption for good cause.

Excuses will be granted ONLY for reasons of compelling personal hardship. Requests for excuses and postponements for jury duty must be made by electronically using the requested online form, or by mail. Your request CANNOT be handled by telephone. All requests must be submitted a minimum of seven (7) days prior to your jury service date.

Until you have received a response from the Clerk of Superior Court’s Office, you are still required to appear at the county courthouse for jury duty on the specified summons date if your juror number is called. If you DO NOT receive a response to an excusal request, you are still required to appear for jury service if your juror number is called.
