As part of its bicentennial celebration, the Supreme Court of North Carolina will hold sessions of court in one of its original homes, the North Carolina State Capitol Building. Sessions will be held on May 28 - 29 and attendees will have the opportunity to watch the proceedings from the floor of the State Capitol Building’s historic Senate Chamber.
WHAT
The Supreme Court of North Carolina will hear three cases per day with a 15-minute break after the second case. View the calendar of arguments for cases and more details.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the court to return to one of its original homes during our bicentennial celebration. I want to invite members of the public to witness this historic occasion as we continue the momentum of traveling sessions held in our Eastern and Western North Carolina communities,” said Chief Justice Cheri Beasley.
WHO
Chief Justice Cheri Beasley will preside over oral arguments, joined by the six associate justices of the Court. The legal communities of Wake and its surrounding counties will also gather for the sessions.
WHEN and WHERE
Three sessions will take place each day on May 28 and May 29 and last approximately one hour. The first session will convene at 9:30 a.m., followed by the second session at 10:30 a.m., followed by a 15-minute break. The third session will convene at 11:45 a.m. and conclude at 12:45 p.m. News media should arrive 30 minutes prior to the 9:30 a.m. convening time, particularly broadcast media who will require setup. No setup will be allowed after court has convened.

All court sessions will be held in the Senate Chamber of the North Carolina State Capitol Building. Cases heard on May 28 will be related to juvenile issues and will not be streamed live.

The Supreme Court of North Carolina is the state’s highest court and there is no further appeal from its decisions on matters of state law. It is comprised of the Chief Justice, who also serves as the head of the Judicial Branch, and six associate justices, each serving eight-year terms.
The Supreme Court of North Carolina has had five permanent homes over its 200-year history. The Court met at the State Capitol Building after its construction in 1840, occupying the Northeast suite of offices on the first floor until it moved to the present day Labor Building in 1888.
