Six Judicial Branch Employees Honored with Caswell Awards

Congratulations to six Judicial Branch employees honored recently with the prestigious Caswell Award in recognition and appreciation for 45 or more years of dedicated, extended service to the State of North Carolina.

The ceremony was held Thursday, August 13, at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. It was the first statewide ceremony since 2004 and honored 44 state employees, including

  • Betty English - DA investigator / worthless check at Buncombe County Courthouse
  • Marlene Fields - deputy clerk at Granville County Courthouse
  • Barbara Hawkins - deputy clerk at Orange County Courthouse
  • Clerk Rachel Joyner - clerk of superior court for Nash County
  • Mary Phillips - arbitration coordinator for district court at Wilkes County Courthouse
  • Patricia Way - deputy clerk at Orange County Courthouse

The Caswell Award is named after former Governor Richard Caswell, who served North Carolina as clerk of court in Orange County, governor in 1776 - 1780 and 1784 - 1787, state controller, and as a state senator. Officially named the Richard Caswell Award Program, it was established in 1998 and is administered by the N.C. Office of State Human Resource (OSHR).
