Chief Justice Mark Martin and the North Carolina Judicial Branch are pleased to honor and commemorate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta.

International, yearlong celebrations culminate Monday in Runnymede, England, along the banks of the River Thames, where on June 15, 1215, King John agreed to the "Great Charter" at the insistence of English barons. Magna Carta is widely recognized as foundational in asserting individual rights and the rule of law above arbitrary government power. Celebrated twentieth-century jurist Lord Denning called Magna Carta, "the greatest constitutional document of all times."

"This day of celebration is a time for all citizens to pause and reflect on how Magna Carta established a precedent in favor of the rule of law," said Chief Justice Martin. "Every citizen is a stakeholder in our justice system, and we should take pride in continuing Magna Carta's legacy today."

"Magna Carta is the cornerstone of our justice system," said Court of Appeals Chief Judge Linda McGee. "It has shaped our constitution and strengthened the rule of law and the effectiveness and fairness of our justice system."

Magna Carta celebrations are planned across the United States, the United Kingdom, and countries around the world.
